Gabe Paul: Four-time Baseball Hall of Fame nominee has numbers in his favor. Decision on his induction is on 12-6-2009
The Yankee Princess, written by Jennie Paul tells the inside story behind Gabe Paul’s NY Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros in the context of their love/hate story in this first ever biography on her Dad.
Four-time Baseball Hall of Fame Nominee Gabe Paul owned and ran four major league baseball teams and is directly responsible for as many pennants–3 for the NY Yankees and one for the Cincinnati Reds. The Father Daughter connection in this love hate story about a woman coming into her own as her Dad was making his dream to own and run a winning baseball team come true, combined with the inside story on George Steinbrenner, Reggie Jackson, Howard Cosell, Billy Martin and Catfish Hunter make a great story that will appeal to baseball fans, reporters, historians, and men who relate better to baseball than their daughters.
Peter Golenbock will be writing the foreword for The Yankee Princess, written by Jennie Paul with Jody Lynn Smith, and it is expected to be released during Spring Training 2010. It will correct many misconceptions about what really happened when Gabe Paul helped the Yankees reverse a 15-year losing streak with two successive World Series wins and one championship loss to his first team, the Reds. This legacy-making accomplishment would not be repeated until the year he died and Joe Torre secured his first of three wins.
Thoroughly researched and inclusive of first-hand real life accounts, conversations, personal letters and newspaper clippings, it will win over the fans and help fathers and daughters find new ways to accept each others’ strengths and weaknesses, while enjoying one of America’s greatest past times.
Gabe Paul is widely known for his uncanny ability in filling seats and running teams like the Indians and the Reds on a cleat string, while leading the way in trades that won ballgames and rule changes that made the sport what it is today. He was an advocate for night baseball, the dissolution of the reserve clause, dividing the leagues into divisions, allowing designated hitters and requiring players to bring their gloves in from the field. Mark Teahen named 2009 Hutch Award winner
Major League Baseball’s Mark Teahen, longtime third baseman for the Kansas City Royals and recently acquired by the Chicago White Sox, will receive the 2009 Hutch Award®. The award is given annually to a Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies the honor, courage and dedication of baseball great Fred Hutchinson, both on and off the field.
The 28-year-old Redlands, Calif., native made his MLB debut with the Royals in April 2005, playing third and first bases and the outfield. He had been a unanimous first-team, All-West Coast Conference selection in 2002. Teahen, whose father is from Ontario, has dual Canadian-American citizenship and last March played on the Canadian men’s national team in the World Baseball Classic. On Nov. 5 he was traded to the White Sox.
“I am extremely excited to accept the Hutch Award, and I am humbled to be added to the prestigious list of former recipients,” Teahen said. “I am honored and am thankful for all of my friends and family who help me accomplish the many successes I’ve been fortunate to achieve.”
Teahen said the Hutch Award and its connection with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center mean even more to him because this year he witnessed his mother’s successful battle with breast cancer.
Off the field, Teahen has been active in the local community. For nearly the entirety of his tenure with the Royals, Teahen served as a key spokesman and fundraiser for the YMCA Challenger Baseball program, a division of Little League Baseball that gives children with physical or mental challenges the opportunity to play on specially designed baseball fields. In addition, he has donated time to the Royals AbilityCAMP, an interactive baseball camp for kids with disabilities, and he has supported other causes and foundations focusing on the well-being of children.
Teahen will visit children at the Hutchinson Center’s Hutch School and receive his award at the annual Hutch Award Luncheon on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at Safeco Field in Seattle. Legendary pitcher and 1989 Hutch Award winner Dave Dravecky will be the featured speaker at the luncheon, which raises funds for cancer research.
The Hutchinson Center was founded by Fred’s brother Bill, a prominent Seattle surgeon, after Fred died of cancer at age 45. The Hutch Award was established in 1965 and was first given to Mickey Mantle. Other Hutch Award winners have included 2008 recipient Jon Lester, Mike Sweeney, Mark Loretta, Craig Biggio, Jamie Moyer, Willie McCovey, Willie Stargell, Omar Vizquel, Sandy Koufax and Carl Yastrzemski. In all, 11 Hall-of-Famers have received the Hutch Award. For more information about the Hutch Award, including a full list of past recipients, visit www.fhcrc.org/hutchaward.

New book chronicles Pittsburgh Pirates from insider’s view
Former Relief Pitcher and Broadcaster Shares Pirates Anecdotes, History in New Memoir
In his illuminating new memoir, “Happiness is like a Cur Dog: The Thirty-Year Journey of a Major League Baseball Pitcher and Broadcaster” (published by AuthorHouse), Nelson J. King takes readers on a remarkable journey, from his birthplace in the hard coal-mining village of Weston Place, Pa., through the golden age of Pittsburgh Pirates baseball.
A captivating storyteller, King has long enjoyed sharing the highlights of his long association with the Pittsburgh Pirates. As a relief pitcher for them from 1954 — 1957, he witnessed many historic moments, and as a broadcaster for Pirates games from 1967 — 1975, King saw, from the inside, the Pirates’ incredible transformation from a struggling team to 1971 Word Series champions.
One of King’s cherished memories shared in “Happiness is like a Cur Dog” goes back to 1941 when, as a 13-year-old, he saw his first major league game at Shibe Park in Philadelphia as the Phillies squared off against the Cincinnati Reds. Back then, fans were permitted to exit the game from the playing field, and as King walked past the visitor’s dugout, his brother remarked that both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig had sat there. Fourteen years later, on April 24, 1955, King would also sit on that bench in a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform.
Although an arm injury unexpectedly ended King’s bullpen days in 1957, he maintained his positive attitude and firm belief that things happen for a reason. He ultimately found his second calling, sports broadcasting, in 1960. From 1967 — 1975, he was one half of the Pirates broadcasting duo, working alongside Bob “The Gunner” Prince on KDKA radio.
King’s pitching and broadcasting careers spanned a generation, and his commentary on the game as it is played today is interwoven with colorful stories from baseball’s golden age. As the undisputed folk historian of Pirates baseball, King brings to life some of the greatest names in Pirates history, including Branch Rickey, Danny Murtaugh, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Bill Mazeroski, Vernon Law and Dave Giusti. With a distinctive narrative style and a reverence for the players, managers, coaches, sportswriters and fans, King offers rich insights into the politics and economics of baseball during a period of profound social and cultural change, shedding light on the game’s role in the transformation of race relations and how the meaning of baseball in America was changed both on and off the field. Find out more in the pages of “Happiness is like a Cur Dog,” a must-read for any Pittsburgh sports fan or baseball enthusiast.

Fox Sports en Espanol hits ratings Home Run with 2009 World Series coverage
Network Strikes Out Competition across All Key Demographics during MLB Post-Season
Fox Sports en Espanol, the country’s leading Spanish-language sports media platform, struck out the competition with its coverage of the recently concluded 2009 Major League Baseball World Series. The network’s number one program during the ratings bonanza was Game Six of the World Series (Yankees vs. Phillies, 11/4/09), which delivered 261,000 Hispanics in the key P18-49 demographic. Overall, Fox Sports en Espanol finished with a 3.43 (1.74 P18-49) household coverage rating, up 81% in total households vs. its World Series coverage from 2008, and 240% over 2007.
“The only thing more exciting for us than this memorable Fall Classic is the fact that our loyal fans consistently tuned in to Fox Sports en Espanol for the best live coverage of the Series,” said David Sternberg, General Manager of Fox Sports en Espanol. “This clearly validates our mission of providing the most important sporting events, with the best analysis, of any Hispanic sports network.”
The results were strong for FSE’s advertisers, as well, with the network over-delivering across all demographics and surpassing its three-year World Series average. Ratings for coverage of the entire Major League post season was up dramatically over last year, with the American League Championship Series drawing a total Hispanic household rating of .92 for P18-49 and 1.24 for men, vs. last year’s .39 and .44 respectively. Overall, Fox Sports en Espanol maintained its position as the leading Hispanic sports network in the ratings for the second week in a row, averaging 73% more Hispanic P18-49 in primetime than its next closest competitor.
This marked the ninth consecutive year that Fox Sports en Espanol has offered live, exclusive Spanish-language coverage of the MLB postseason. In addition, as part of a seven-year partnership with Fox Broadcasting Company that runs through the 2013 season, the network will continue to offer live and exclusive Spanish-language coverage of approximately 26 MLB regular-season games each year plus the annual All-Star Game.
