New Deadline for Music, Dance, Rap or Spoken Word Counter-Beer-Ads – $1,000 Top Prize

Nasty Winter Weather Slows-Down Young Video Producers

Midnight, January 27, 2011 is the new deadline to enter Marin Institute’s 3rd annual Free The Bowl Video Contest. Youth 10-20 years old are encouraged to submit 30-60 second original music, dance, rap or spoken word performance counter-beer-ads. The top prize is $1,000.

“We heard from young people across the country that this winter’s nasty weather interfered with their production schedules,” stated Michael Scippa, Marin Institute’s public affairs director. “So we’re giving them 3 more days to enter their counter-beer-ads.”

Research has shown that the more alcohol ads kids see, the more likely they are to drink, drink to excess and drink more often. In 2009, the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking reported that 5,000 people under the age of 21 die annually from injuries caused by alcohol. Hundreds of thousands more suffer alcohol-fueled sexual assaults, serious injuries, diseases, and academic failure. Underage drinking costs the U.S. $60 billion annually.

“Beer ads on TV sports programs, and especially during the NFL’s supposedly ‘family friendly’ Super Bowl, are a massive overdose of inappropriate alcohol advertising that must be curbed to reduce youth alcohol-related harm,” Scippa added.

A recent analysis released by the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, shows that voluntary industry advertising codes are ineffective. According to the study, youth exposure to alcohol advertising on U.S. television increased 71 percent between 2001 and 2009. The research also pointed to Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Bud Light, a mainstay of Super Bowl advertising, as one of 12 brands targeting youth. Read more

Division names and trophies to highlight legends and leaders throughout Big Ten history

The Big Ten Conference made several announcements that complete a series of decisions prompted by the upcoming addition of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln as the conference’s 12th member school. The conference revealed a new logo to be used for all sports beginning with the 2011-12 academic year and also unveiled names for its two football divisions and a list of names for 18 trophies to honor coaches, teams and student-athletes starting with the 2011 football season.

“When we announced football division alignments in September, other associated decisions had not yet been made.  We wanted to take some time to listen, carefully consider, and make choices that would best honor our history and traditions, reflect our core values and characteristics, and tell our story,” said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany. “We involved many thoughtful, dedicated professionals and we listened to many ideas from our member schools, alumni and fans.”

Boston College to Play Nevada in Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

Boston College, riding a five game winning streak to close out the regular season, will face No. 13 Nevada in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl game at AT&T Park.  The 7-5 Eagles and 12-1 Wolf Pack will play Sunday, January 9, 2011 with a 6 p.m. [PST]/9:00 p.m. [EST] kickoff.  ESPN will televise the game to a nationwide audience.

Bowl co-founder and Executive Director Gary Cavalli welcomed the Eagles back to San Francisco after prior visits in 2003, a victory over Colorado State; and 2009, a loss to USC.  ”We’re excited to bring Boston College back to San Francisco,” Cavalli said.  ”They’re a first-class organization in every respect. BC’s outstanding defensive unit, coupled with Nevada’s record-setting offense, will make for a very interesting and strategic matchup. We’re proud to feature one of the most explosive players in the country, Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and one of the top defensive players, BC linebacker Luke Kuechly.”

Boston College in 12 starts allowed just 962 rushing yards, seven rush TDs, a 2.7 average per carry and only 80.2 yards/game on the ground.  The Eagles’ defensive effort was led by the sophomore Kuechly, the 2009 Emerald Bowl most outstanding defensive player. Kuechly led all ACC tacklers this season with 171 stops [102 solo, 69 assists], 42 more than his nearest pursuer.

The Eagles also boast the ACC’s leading ball carrier in RB Montel Harris. Harris, a junior, carried 269 times this year for 1,243 yards, eight TDs and a 103.6 yards/game average to pace all ACC rushers.  For his 3-year career, the Jacksonville, FL native has 756 carries, 3,600 total yards and 27 touchdowns Read more
