A museum containing a collection of some of the rarest and most significant racing sports cars in the world will open in Philadelphia on June 17, 2008. The Simeone Foundation Museum is the creation of Philadelphia neurosurgeon Dr. Frederick Simeone, who began acquiring the cars in the collection five decades ago.
“Many of these cars are legendary for what they accomplished in racing history,” said Simeone. “We expect people from all over the world will come to see them.”
The cars are displayed in dioramas that represent some of the famous race courses where they actually competed: Watkins Glen, Bonneville, Sebring, the Mille Miglia and Le Mans.
The Museum displays racing sports cars — cars with fenders and headlights that could conceivably be driven on the street or in competition. Significant cars in the exhibit include the “Hippie” Porsche 917 (named for its psychedelic paint scheme), a 1958 Aston Martin DBR1 that Stirling Moss drove to victory, a Cobra Daytona Coupe that had been lost for 30 years until Simeone helped in its recovery, a Le Mans-winning Bugatti, and a 1938 Alfa Romeo, winner of the Mille Miglia.
The museum is different from most other automotive collections in that the cars are used to tell a story — that competition and racing improves the marque. Like Philadelphia’s famed Barnes Foundation collection of paintings, the Simeone Foundation is a personal collection, assembled over a long period of time with a singular vision. The central theme of the exhibition is “the spirit of competition.”
“There are few examples of the effects of competition as dramatic and beautiful as the evolution of the racing sports car,” explains Simeone. “Our collection begins with a car from 1909 and continues to the mid-1970s. You can see the remarkable technological improvements — in the span of just seven decades — that came from competition.”
The collection is housed in a 75,000 square foot building, five minutes off Interstate 95, an easy day’s drive for more than 20 percent of the nation’s population.
The Museum is located at 6825-31 Norwitch Drive, Philadelphia. Pa., 19153. For more information visit the Web site at: http://www.simeonemuseum.org/.

The electrical construction industry’s NECA-IBEW team broke new ground in union recruitment when they became the first to sponsor a NASCAR driver with the aim of promoting a website.
Alli Owens, the sponsored driver and among the youngest women ever to compete in NASCAR events, races her #12 car emblazoned with the URL www.electrifyingcareers.com, the main apprentice recruiting website created by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
“It was clear to us that NASCAR sponsorship was an optimal fit for our recruitment strategy,” says Ed Hill, president of IBEW. “NASCAR is the number two sport in America in terms of audience draw, just behind the NFL, and 58 percent of those fans are between the ages of 18 and 44, right in our target demographic. The alliance creates a powerful national marketing platform for reaching millions of potential recruits.”
Since the sponsorship began, visits to the website have risen by more than 300 percent.
Says E. Milner Irvin, president of NECA, “We’re proud to support Alli as she moves up in the rankings. At the same time, we’re speaking to our target audience. We’re raising awareness and driving traffic to our website. And once there, we’re giving visitors a persuasive presentation of the career opportunities open in the electrical construction and information systems industries. In that regard, the program has been an unqualified success.”

Beverage Plus Interview With D.J. Kennington, Driver of No. 81 the Vector Security / MC2 Energy Drink Dodge Appearing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series
“At MacDonald Motorsports we have a great car ready for the Lipton Tea 250 at Richmond, Virginia. This is expected to be one of the most exciting races of the 2008 season - it is a night-time race this Friday on a .75 mile short-track” says D.J. Kennington. He continues, “We were racing in the 5th to 7th position at Talladega, Alabama last week, and had it not been for the wreck towards the end of the race we were likely to have finished in the top 10. At speeds over 195 MPH even with a restrictor plate, we attracted a great deal of attention. We finished in the 25th position in the MC2 Energy Drink Dodge at the Corona Mexico 200 at Mexico City and we were one of the faster qualifying cars at Talladega.”
“Even though I have many years of experience driving on short-tracks in Canada, and have won quite a few races in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, I believe that the Lipton Tea 250 race will be extremely challenging and competitive. You’ve got Clint Bowyer driving the No. 2 BB&T Chevy who is the defending champion here and Kyle Busch driving the no. 32 Haas Avocadoes Mexico Toyota who has done remarkably well in recent races. David Stemme impressed many fans and racing teams with his strong performance last week in the Talladega driving the no. 64 Atreus Homes and Community Chevy.” says D.J. Kennington.
He continues, “Despite their great prospects for this weekend, I think the guy to beat at Richmond is Jason Leffler driving the No. 38 Great Clips Toyota. Jason has done great at Richmond in the past - scoring an 11th place finish the last time he raced here. It was great to have raced up close and tight with Jason Leffler last week, and based on what I saw of his racing at Talladega, he’s the guy I would like to keep in my rear view mirror. Together, along with a few of the other teams, we might be in a strong position as Nationwide regulars to continue the momentum of what was seen at Talladega with the regulars having such a strong finish and overall performance throughout last race - eight of the top 12 cars finishing at the Aaron’s 312 were NASCAR Nationwide Series regulars.”
