Two-Time Formula DRIFT Champ Hubinette to Field Two-Car Dodge Team in 2011

March 28, 2011 · Filed Under Motor Sports, News, Sports News · Comment

Two-time champion Samuel Hubinette is set to unleash a one-two Dodge punch on the Formula DRIFT (FD) Series in 2011.

The “Crazy Swede,” who returns for a second year of dual owner and driver roles, will drive his own Samuel Hubinette Racing (SHR) Dodge Motorsports Dodge Challenger, while new teammate, European ProDrift champ Dean Kearney will pilot the SHR Dodge Viper SRT10, sponsored by V-LEDS-Federal.

Dodge Motorsports will again serve as primary sponsor for Hubinette’s Challenger. V-LEDS will take the primary sponsorship role on Kearney’s Dodge Viper SRT10, while veteran Brad Manka will return as crew chief for both SHR machines.

“We’re very excited about the upcoming season and can’t wait to get to Long Beach,” said Hubinette, who earned two FD championships in his first three seasons, including the series’ inaugural year in 2004. “The SHR Dodge Challenger should be even more formidable with a year of competition under our belt, and Dean Kearney is a talented, young driver who will surely be competitive right out of the gate in the SHR Dodge Viper SRT10. Coach K and Coach Knight, the only two coaches in NCAA history with 900 career wins, discuss their milestone, the NCAA Tournament and other topics

Next edition of Mike Krzyzewski’s weekly talk show debuts Wednesday, March 23 (7:00 pm ET/4:00 pm PT)

Sirius XM Radio announced that the next edition of Basketball and Beyond with Coach K, the weekly show hosted by Duke University and U.S. Men’s National Team coach Mike Krzyzewski, will debut Wednesday, March 23 (7:00 pm ET/4:00 pm PT) on Mad Dog Radio (Sirius channel 123 and XM channel 144) and feature a special interview with Coach K’s mentor and former coach, Bob Knight.

Krzyzewski recorded his 900th career coaching victory Sunday with the Blue Devils’ third-round win over Michigan, becoming the second coach in history to reach that mark and putting him two wins behind Knight who holds the all-time record with 902.

Coach K’s and Coach Knight’s careers have been intertwined since Krzyzewski played for Knight at the U.S. Military Academy in the late 1960s.  Coach K’s first job in college basketball came when he was offered a graduate assistant position by Knight at the University of Indiana and, like Knight, Krzyzewski’s first head coaching job was at West Point.

On this week’s show, Krzyzewski and Knight discuss what reaching the 900-win milestone means to them and their players:

Coach Knight : “It isn’t how many games that you’ve won or you’ve won the most or you’re going to win the most or whatever.  It’s kinda the fact that you’ve gotten to a plateau that during the time that you’ve coached nobody else has ever gotten to.  And that’s a reflection, as you well know and as you’ve said, on all the people that have played for you. … It includes everybody that helped you win a game during all that time and each of those kids can remember back to some game they hit a free throw or they stole the ball, blocked a shot or made a basket or whatever.” Read more

Nissan Makes Successful Return to International Sports Car Racing at Mobile One 12 Hours of Sebring

March 21, 2011 · Filed Under Motor Sports, News, Sports News · Comment

Signatech Nissan enjoyed a podium finish upon its debut in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) on Saturday, with the team finishing an impressive second in the LMP2 class at the Mobile One 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida, the opening race of the 2011 ILMC season.

Sebring marks Nissan’s first participation in international prototype racing in the U.S. since the Nineties, and the Signatech Nissan started the day first in class, and in 11th position on the grid overall, following a stunning qualifying performance on Friday that saw driver Soheil Ayari posting a best time that was a full three seconds ahead of the nearest LMP2 competitor.

It was Ayari’s team-mate, Franck Mailleux, who started the race at 10:30 am, and he quickly established a good lead in the P2 class before handing over to Lucas Ordonez – an astounding debut for a driver who three short years ago had never raced competitively before being crowned the inaugural Nissan /PlayStation GT Academy winner in 2008.

Ordonez began his session well, but a serious gearbox issue on lap 78 meant that the Signatech Nissan faced a long delay in the pit lane, during which the fellow LMP2 class competitors were able to develop a 15 lap advantage.  It wasn’t until after the seven hour mark that the car found itself heading up the LMP2 field again, as strong and aggressive driving from all three drivers slowly but surely whittled away the earlier deficit. FA Cup Semi Finals at Wembley: Saturday Sunday 16 17 April

March 19, 2011 · Filed Under Athletics, News, Soccer, Sports News · Comment

Virgin Trains is urgently working with clubs involved in the FA Cup semi finals over the weekend of 16/17 April to ensure thousands of supporters can travel to and from London quickly and safely.

Virgin Trains has already confirmed five charter trains and is advising clubs on how to charter further trains from other companies. Supporters are recommended to get in touch with their respective travel clubs to find out details of charters that are either confirmed or are being planned.

Chris Gibb, Virgin Trains’ Chief Operating Officer said today: “Moving large numbers of people after any big evening sporting event poses particular challenges for the rail industry especially coming together as the same weekend as the London Marathon and another large football match. The use of charter trains brings as much capacity as possible into use, means fans can have confidence in their travel arrangements and clubs are able to look after their supporters.”

Those not travelling by charter services will still be able to travel by Virgin Trains to both matches with extra trains planned from Euston after both the Saturday and Sunday matches. Clearly, however, with each Pendolino train capable of carrying a maximum of 439 seated passengers, but with a crowd of around 80,000 expected for both matches, supporters are being encouraged to make use of charter services organised through their respective clubs.

Details of additional trains will be available on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk as soon as timings have been confirmed with Network Rail.
