After closer Brad Lidge struck out the final batter on October 29, Phillies fans everywhere began celebrating a World Series Championship. During the onfield celebration, Phillies players had their chance to enjoy the trophy, and now fans throughout Delaware Valley will have their opportunity as well.

Next week, the Phillies will begin a World Series Trophy Tour, presented by Teva Pharmaceuticals and Comcast SportsNet. The trophy will make nearly 30 appearances this month with more to follow throughout 2009.

“The passion of our fans throughout last season and the postseason was phenomenal,” said David Buck, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Advertising Sales. “Now, we want to take the trophy to them. We especially want to thank Teva Pharmaceuticals and Comcast SportsNet for joining us in this special tour.”

The trophy will appear at luncheons, banquets, malls, schools, events, recreational centers involved with the Phillies Phundamentals after-school program, and top performing schools involved in the Verizon Be a Phanatic About Reading Program.

The schedule for February will be announced later this month. One of the events next month will be the FanFest held at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., on Friday, February 20.

World Series Trophy Trivia

History

The initial World Series trophy was created by Major League Baseball in 1967. The St. Louis Cardinals were the first recipient.

The official name of the trophy is “The Commissioner’s Trophy”. The Baseball Commissioner presents the trophy to the owner(s), general manager and manager of the championship team. Each year, one full-sized trophy is created and awarded to the winners.

Originally, the trophy presentation took place in the clubhouse. In 1997 (Florida Marlins), the presentation was held on the field for the first time. Currently, home teams have a ceremony on the field, while visiting teams receive the trophy in the clubhouse.

Design
MLB commissioned Tiffany & Co. to create the World Series trophy in 2000.

It takes Tiffany & Co. master artisans more than three months and more than 200 troy ounces of sterling silver to create the trophy that stands 24 inches high (not including the base) with a diameter of 11 inches. It weighs approximately 30 pounds.

Features

The trophy features 30 flags, one representing each Major League team, with latitude/longitude lines symbolizing the world and 24-karat vermeil stitches representing those on a baseball. Engraved on the base are the words: “Presented by the Commissioner of Baseball” along with the signature of Baseball Commissioner Allan G. (Bud) Selig.
